Sumana Prabhakar

Dr. Sumana Prabhakar earned both her bachelor’s degree and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Michigan State University. Following graduation, she completed a one-year small animal rotating internship at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in Massachusetts. She then went on to complete a residency in cardiology at the University of Illinois. After falling in love with New England, Dr. Prabhakar returned to Massachusetts and joined the Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital (MVRH) team in 2024.

Dr. Prabhakar’s clinical interests encompass the diagnosis and management of all cardiac diseases, with a focus on optimizing each patient’s care and quality of life at home. She has a special interest in interventional cardiology procedures, including patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) occlusion, balloon valvuloplasty, and pacemaker implantation.

At MVRH, Dr. Prabhakar values being part of a busy, collaborative, and highly communicative team. She emphasizes the importance of doctor-to-doctor collaboration behind the scenes, ensuring that every patient receives comprehensive and coordinated care.

Dr. Prabhakar is particularly excited about the rapid advancements within veterinary cardiology, one of the fastest-growing specialties in the field. She is passionate about bringing cutting-edge treatment options to her patients through participation in clinical trials, advanced medication management, and interventional procedures, continuing to push the boundaries of veterinary medicine.
